Artykuł porusza temat melancholii w kontekście obrazów Lucasa Cranacha Starszego, analizując ich związek z ryciną Albrechta Dürera Melencolia I oraz z rosnącą popularnością protestantyzmu w XVI wieku. Autor bada, jak Cranach, nawiązując do Dürera, dokonuje reinterpretacji i dekonstrukcji klasycznej symboliki melancholii, łącząc ją z teorią humoralną oraz z elementami religijnymi, które są obecne w protestanckiej wizji świata. Obrazy Cranacha przedstawiają zarówno melancholię w jej różnych aspektach, jak i związki z grzechem i zepsuciem, ukazując wizerunek kobiety anioła, który może być interpretowany jako prefiguracja Nierządnicy z Apokalipsy św. Jana.

The article explores the theme of melancholy in the context of Lucas Cranach the Elder’s paintings, analyzing their connection to Albrecht Dürer’s engraving Melencolia I and the growing popularity of Protestantism in the 16th century. The author examines how Cranach, drawing on Dürer’s earlier works, reinterprets and deconstructs the classical symbolism of melancholy, intertwining it with humoral theory and religious elements present in the Protestant worldview. Cranach’s paintings depict both the various aspects of melancholy and its associations with sin and corruption, presenting the image of a female angel, which can be interpreted as a prefiguration of the Whore of Babylon from the Book of Revelation.
